Yesterday’s Spoleto Finale at Middleton Place with Cedric Watson and Bijou Creole was certainly the wettest we’ve ever been to, but it was lots of fun nonetheless. (Photos by Hunter McRae)
Continuing with in our bluegrass-bands-covering-popular-songs-at-Spoleto video series, here’s Joy Kills Sorrow (who were absolutely PHENOMENAL last night) doing their take on the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights” at their soundcheck. Suck it, Sam Beam.
Renaud Garcia-Fons explains some of techniques and demonstrates the rich variety he can express on his double bass. He performs as part of Spoleto tonight through Thursday.
Yeah, this is Ketch and Critter from Old Crow Medicine Show (and most of the rest of the band) singing Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” at their soundcheck yesterday. They repeated the performance at their pre-Spoleto show last night during their encore.
Our first Spoleto issue is out on stands now with the cover boys from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. It comes with our buzz-o-meters (a handy guide to what you should be buying tickets for right now), previews for the coming week’s shows, and a calendar and map.
Spoleto Spoleto Spoleto. It’s really all we’re going to be talking about for the next three weeks. Get used to it. It doesn’t officially kick off until Friday (well, sort of on Thursday, what with the art openings and bluegrass concert that night), but we got a sneak peek at the set of Feng Yi Ting, one of this year’s operas, directed by Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan.
Artist Motoi Yamamoto is currently on his knees at the Halsey, prepping his exhibit Return to the Sea: Saltworks. Since you have to view the exhibit from that wood-and-glass perch seen above, we expect Thursday’s opening reception will be a bit crowded.
As Spoleto comes to a close this weekend, it’s nice to send the festival off with a picnic (and some champagne) at the finale at Middleton Place. Get there early to tour the grounds and get your cheese-and-wine on before the Del McCoury Band takes the stage.
Or, for a less expensive affair, there’s the Piccolo Finale at Hampton Park on Saturday.
Ouch.
Spoleto comes to an end this weekend. Are you sad? Are you relieved? Are you excited to see a show about the zombie apocalypse?
